Transnet Learnerships: How to Apply Through the Official Portal

Transnet runs one of the largest youth training pipelines in South Africa, and it accepts applications through exactly one channel. Everything else claiming to take Transnet applications is either out of date or trying to take something from you. This page gives you the working address, checked on the day it was published, and what to have ready.

The portal is a Cornerstone recruitment system on the domain transnettalentportal.csod.com. That is not a Transnet domain, which understandably makes people nervous, but it is correct: large employers commonly use a third party applicant tracking system, and Transnet links to it directly from its own careers page. That link, from the official site, is the thing to verify rather than the domain name.

One address you will find everywhere that no longer works

A large number of “Transnet learnership” articles publish transnet.net/Careers/Pages/default.aspx. We tested it: it redirects to Transnet’s own error page. It is not a scam, it is simply stale, republished from site to site long after Transnet reorganised its website. The working address is the shorter transnet.net/Careers.

We mention it because it is a good illustration of the general problem. An address appearing in twenty articles is not a checked address.

What Transnet runs

Transnet operates South Africa’s freight rail, ports and pipelines, and employs a workforce in the tens of thousands. Its youth pipeline covers, at various times:

Technical learnerships and apprenticeships, feeding into artisan trades: electrical, mechanical, fitting, welding, diesel mechanics, rail specific trades.
Non-technical or work integrated learnerships, in areas such as operations, logistics, supply chain, finance and administration.
Engineering bursaries and graduate or engineer-in-training programmes, for people already studying or recently qualified.
Internships and work integrated learning placements for TVET and university of technology students needing workplace hours.

What is open at any given moment changes, and we are not going to guess. The portal shows what is genuinely open right now, which is why we send you there rather than publishing a list that will be wrong within weeks.

How to apply

Go to transnet.net/Careers and follow the link to the Talent Portal. Type the address rather than clicking a link from a message.
Create a candidate profile. You do this once and reuse it. Use an email address you actually check.
Complete the profile fully. Partly completed profiles are commonly filtered out before a human sees them, which is the most common self inflicted rejection.
Upload your documents: CV, ID, matric certificate or latest results, and any further qualifications.
Apply to the specific requisition. Each programme has its own reference. A profile sitting in the system without an application attached to a live requisition is not an application.
Expect assessments. Larger intakes typically involve online assessments, then interviews, then, for technical roles, a medical.
Be patient. State owned employer recruitment cycles are long. Months of silence is normal.

What is usually required

This is the general shape of what Transnet youth programmes have asked for, not a quotation from a current advert. The advert you are applying to is the authority, and if it disagrees with this list, believe the advert.

South African citizenship and a valid ID.
Typically 18 to 35, as these are funded youth programmes.
Matric for most programmes. Technical learnerships and apprenticeships normally require mathematics and physical science, often at a stated minimum symbol, and an N certificate from a TVET college is commonly accepted or preferred.
Not currently bound by a bursary or training obligation to another organisation.
Medical fitness for operational and technical roles. Rail and port environments have real safety requirements, and colour vision testing applies to some roles.

Documents to prepare before you start

Getting this done first turns the application into a ten minute job:

Certified copy of your ID. Certification at a police station is free.
Certified copy of your matric certificate, or your latest results if you are still completing it.
Certified copies of any further qualifications, including N certificates.

Proof of residence and your banking details, which are usually only needed after selection. Do not send banking details with an application.

Avoiding the scams that use Transnet’s name

Transnet is one of the most impersonated employer names in South African recruitment fraud, precisely because the programmes are real and sought after. The defences are simple:

Transnet does not charge you to apply. No application fee, no registration fee, no “securing your place”, no fee for a medical or a uniform.
Applications go through the Talent Portal. Not WhatsApp, not Facebook, not a Gmail address, not a form on somebody else’s website.
An advert with the Transnet logo on a site that is not Transnet’s proves nothing. Logos are trivially copied. Check the portal yourself.
No legitimate recruiter needs your banking details or an OTP before you are appointed.
If it is not on the Talent Portal, it is not open. That single check settles almost every case.

What Transnet pays a learner

Transnet does not publish a standard learner rate publicly, and we will not invent one. What we can tell you is the floor: where a registered learnership agreement is in place, the gazetted minimum allowance applies, running from R455,00 to R2 654,04 a week depending on NQF level and credits earned. Large state owned employers commonly pay above the minimum. The full official table is here, and the actual figure will be in your offer.

If nothing is open right now

This is the normal state of affairs for most of the year, and it is not a reason to stop:

Create the profile anyway. When an intake opens it closes quickly, and having a complete profile already in the system is a genuine advantage.
Check monthly, and more often between September and January, which is when youth intakes are commonly advertised.

Apply elsewhere in parallel. Waiting for one employer is the most common mistake in learnership hunting.
